David Dewett Veterans Memorial Wayside

Navy Veteran, David Dewett, let us begin from the beginning

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

      • 3 Flag Poles
      • 5 Inscribed Granite pedestals that are surrounded by hundreds of Paver Bricks.
      • A tribute for our POW/MIAs
      • 2 Benches and 2 picnic tables
      • A Blue Star Memorial Highway Tribute
      • A Gold Star Memorial Highway Tribute
      • A Battlefield Cross

How it all Began:

A few years ago, our local Point Man Ministries group embarked on a mission to enhance our community. We reached out to the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) to join the Adopt-a-Highway program, seeking to maintain a stretch of our local highways.

After some anticipation, a unique and impactful opportunity presented itself.

The state proposed that we adopt a Wayside just north of the iconic McCullough Bridge, heading north from North Bend, Oregon.

The highlight? We were offered the incredible chance to establish a veteran’s memorial at this site, ensuring it would seamlessly blend with the breathtaking views of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and the McCullough Bridge. This proposal ignited our spirits, especially those of Navy veteran David Dewett, who took the lead in organizing work parties. He rallied volunteers to mow the lawn, pick up trash, and maintain the site. They placed picnic tables to encourage visitors to linger and reflect, and the state erected a commemorative sign.

Honor & Respect:

David Durham made this sign to place at the Wayside.

Shortly before being diagnosed with lung cancer, David urged us to expedite the design for the wayside with a sense of urgency that only he could convey. His firm yet caring approach deeply moved us all.

As the cancer progressed rapidly, Brother Dave passed away on August 6, 2005. A Celebration of Life was held at his home on South Lakeside, where many gathered to pay their respects.

In our time of mourning, we resolved to honor Dave’s memory by establishing the “David Dewett Veterans Memorial Wayside.” His family deeply appreciated our gesture, reflecting our collective respect and admiration for David.

With great sorrow, we also share that Dave’s wife, Lynette Roseveare DeWett, tragically passed away in a single-car accident on March 4, 2007. May she rest in peace alongside Dave.

On Veterans Day, November 11, 2008, the David Dewett Veterans Memorial was officially dedicated, standing as a tribute to honor the service and sacrifice of veterans.

Veterans’ and War Memorial Grants Program

The 73rd Oregon Legislative Assembly concluded just one day before David Dewett’s passing. In that pivotal session, they passed House Bill 2739, a groundbreaking piece of legislation. This bill provides state funding assistance through State Parks and Recreation to nonprofit veterans’ organizations for constructing and restoring veterans and war memorials on public property.

For our local Point Man Ministries outreach, a nonprofit organization, this legislation couldn’t have come at a more significant moment. The property in question is public, making us eligible for this much-needed support. We view this as a profound answer to our prayers and a tremendous blessing.

Empowered by this new legislation, Point Man Ministries will be applying for funding as soon as the program begins in January 2006, with renewed vigor and a commitment to honor our veterans.

“Nonprofit organizations are crafted with resilience, fueled by hope to weather challenges and thrive on their dedication to service. However, this commitment comes with its costs. Grants and the benevolence of donors are the lifeblood that enables nonprofits to support those they serve.”
