The Plan

When David Kronsteiner, a lifetime resident and the passionate Owner and President of West Coast Contractors (WCC) in Coos Bay, learned about the DDVMW in 2007, he was deeply moved and inspired. Fueled by a vision of community and legacy, David appointed his dedicated Superintendent, Dave Gerlach, to spearhead the mission. Their goal was ambitious: to rally local and state contractors, unions, and volunteers to join forces and bring Phase I of the project to life.

With unwavering dedication and boundless enthusiasm, both Daves embraced the challenge with extraordinary zeal. Month after month, they worked tirelessly, igniting a spirit of collaboration and commitment that resonated across the region.

Today, we are elated to share the triumphant news: with the invaluable support of many volunteers, their mission has succeeded beyond expectations! We proudly received a monumental Letter of Commitment for $47,788.82 from West Coast Contractors on February 6, 2008.

After months of dedicated brainstorming, our Point Man DDVMW Committee proudly submitted a grant application to the Veterans’ and War Memorial Grants program, sponsored by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD). In December 2007, we requested $63,000.00 for Phase II of the project, including a 20% contribution in Matching Funds from our organization. We are absolutely thrilled to announce that the Veterans and War Memorial Grants committee has authorized the maximum grant of $50,400.00 on March 13, 2008!

With this incredible support, we will swiftly move forward once all signatures are in place. The next steps include ordering Granite slabs and initiating the Engraving process. Central Lincoln People’s Utility District is set to install a power pole, and Reese Electric will manage the electrical component of the project. We are confident that Phases I & II will reach completion by mid-summer.

Looking ahead, Point Man Outpost 101 is already gearing up for Phase III of the memorial. Our vision includes adding more benches, bronze plaques, a sundial, additional walkways, and enhanced landscaping. As stewards of this memorial, we are committed to its maintenance for years to come and are actively seeking ongoing donations of cash and/or paver bricks to support this endeavor.

Energizing Community Spirit: Planning Committee Meetings for the Memorial
In the heart of our community, the Planning Committee for the Memorial has been tirelessly working to bring this meaningful project to life. The committee, composed of passionate individuals from diverse backgrounds, meets regularly to discuss and strategize every detail of the memorial.

Planning Meetings and Collaborative Efforts

Our meetings are a hive of activity and collaboration. Each session is marked by productive discussions, brainstorming sessions, and meticulous planning. From selecting the perfect location for the memorial to deciding on the design elements, every decision is made with the utmost care and consideration for our shared vision.

Engaging the Community

One of the committee’s primary goals is to raise awareness and engage the community in this monumental project. We have launched a series of initiatives to keep everyone informed and involved:

Community Presentations: We hold regular presentations at local schools, community centers, and town halls to share our progress and future plans.

Fundraising and Outreach

In addition to planning and awareness, the committee is dedicated to securing the necessary funds for the memorial. Through various fundraising events, grant applications, and donor outreach programs, we are making significant strides toward our financial goals.

Grant Applications: Our grant writing team diligently applies for grants from various organizations and governmental bodies to secure additional funding.

Donor Outreach: We reach out to local businesses and individuals, sharing the importance of the memorial and inviting them to contribute through donations or sponsorships.

Looking Ahead

As we continue our journey, the Planning Committee remains steadfast in its commitment to honoring our community’s history and heritage. With every meeting, every volunteer effort, and every dollar raised, we are one step closer to realizing the dream of a beautiful, lasting memorial.
